We bought a 70 watt 10K metal halide off ebay. 2 days after we put it in it had killed more that $100 of our life in the salt water aquarium. Our local dealer says maybe it needs a UV glass on it (looks like it has a place for one). Can anyone be more specific on what type of glass we should have.

Treated glass that filters the UV rays. Should be able to get one from the manufacturer of the MH.
This is very important--MH light can be damaging to everything in the aquarium, from fish to inverts, including corals--and to the aquariast poking around in the tank.

unless its a double ended bulb, theres no need for tempered glass to block the UV.
Are you sure the temperature hasent risen after the bulb install?

It is a double ended bulb. Looks like I am in trouble.

in that case, you need a piece of tempered glass to go below the bulb.

Please explain what you mean by a double-ended bulb? Most bulbs I have seen all look the same.

When you put the bulb into the fixture you have 2 sides to insert, kinda like a AA battery.

Can't say that I have ever seen that type. Then again I am new at this.

The double ended ones are called HQI too.

yea they are, even though HQI is a brand name, and they make both HQI SE and DE bulbs.

OOO, sorry about that. I always see HQI all over the place when looking at MH bulbs. Thanks for the correction slip.

you were right, it is commonly used to refer to HQI bulbs or even ballasts.
Sort of like calling tissues 'kleenex' I suppose.
