Hey Folks,

I need some advice on plecos, basically I have a small tank 30 litres (i think) that has coral sand, a couple of big rocks and has a few fancy gold fish. I'm gettin' a bit sick of the auld algae problem so I thought I could get a pleco to keep it to a minimum.

Is there such a thing as cold water plecos. what species and any other advice would be great

Cheers

I think a pleco could adjust to cold water conditions if u got one u can get a clown pleco it gets 6 or 7 inches long

A hill stream loach looks like a cross between a sting ray and a pleco and they are cold water. Maybe you could do that. don't know if you have room though if its only a 30 liter tank and you already have goldfish in it. Goldfish can get big and messy. Usually you're looking at 10g of water for each of them I think.

30 liters is less than 10 gallons.
The plecos that stay small usually are not the best at algae removal. Maybe a bristlenose, but even they would be too large for such a small tank, especially sharing it with goldfish.
Clown plecos require water in the range of 74-82 degrees F. and are best kept between 76-78 degrees F.
It is better to control algae with light (less of it), and nutrients( less fish waste).

As was mentioned your tank is too overstocked for a pleco. Plecos tend to produce waste, a lot of it. So do goldfish, a lot of it.

Plecos also need great water conditions, esp the smaller varieties. Your tank is just too small and too over populated.

If you can't keep the algae problem low then chances are the water isn't good enough for a small pleco.
