I bought my most recent aquarium used form a guy that had african cichlids in it, and it came with a huge can of medium-sized (about 1/8" round) wardley "cichlid pellets". i think it's just a regular high-protien staple food.

I am thinking about making some gelatin based paste food with beef heart, spinach, vitamins, etc. and I notice most recipes say to put all the ingredients together then add flake food to thicken it. Would using this food, maybe crushed up or something, work? I'd like to find a way to use it since it's fresh and there's so much of it, but none of my fish are big enough to eat it.. my angelfish might be in a couple months, but until then...

What sort of african cichlids do you have? For many types (esp. mbuna), the diet you propose would likely be way to high in protein and/or fat. Even many of the 'cichlid pellets' sold are better suited for non-herbivorous cichlids.

If it's fresh, and your fish are not herbivourous, I'd use it. just grind it and add it to your mix. If you have any doubt about freshness just scrap it or feed it to snails. I don't like pitching anything, but am careful with fish food.

I din't have the cichlids any more, I sold them. Now, it's my community tank with angels, tetras, swordtails, cories, and a pair of kribs when I get them.

I am 90% sure the food is fresh because it's all dry and fresh looking and smelling, and the guy had 5 5" cichlids in his tank and the can was all the way full. I'd eat it, so I feel comfortable feeding it to my fish. It kinda tastes like dirt with fish mixed in though, so I don't eat it.

Thanks for the advice.

I'd just break/grind it up enough for the fish you have and use it. The freshness idea isn't always something you can tell though. basically many of the nutrients in fish food oxidize out after 3-6 months so it isn't reccomended to use it for your prized pets, but it probably won't hurt them.

mm, good idea. I like it. I tried soy sauce too. I think the best is a mix of the two, drip a little soy sauce on first, then cover in ketchup and chow down. mmmmm, spirulina and fish meal:D

I agree with longtime I would go for it.
