Catfish

A good friend of mine is looking for a catfish to add to his well established outdoor pond. The pond already has many large goldfish (around 6 inches), and seasonally frogs and toads.

Despite the Michigan weather, the fish are all able to winter in the pond without a problem, and he'd like a catfish which could also do the same.

A full size of ~6" or so would be ideal. Nothing too fancy, and easy to care for would also be a requirement.

Any ideas?
 
I would look at getting a black bullhead.

Native to central and eastern NA.

Gets to about 14" max. The ones I've caught were smaller- 9" or less.

Eats anything almost- pellets, worms, feeder fish, bread, cheese, dog food.

About how much do they run as young adults/juviniles? Any good places to get them (I can't find any on Aquabid).

What about your local lake? Catch a bullhead or channel cat and take it home, it'd be free! With a valid fishing licence you could catch and keep a variety of lake fish (smaller) like bluegill, sunfish, catfish, perch, rockbass ... just an idea. I tried that 2 years ago and the fish were tons of fun to watch at feeding time. My pond froze completely solid though that winter and I lost all the inhabitants. I was so sad.
