Does anyone know anything about the "Supreme Skilter 250 Power Filter" online at Big Al's? Would this be a good choice for a 30G planted tank?

No, not really. Very few skimmers create small enough bubbles to be effective in FW systems--skimmers are mostly used in marine and brackish tanks, where the surface tension is different, and allows the bubbles to force protiens out of the water.

that filter is seriously noisy and hard to adjust on a marine tank and useless on fw

Not to mention you dont want alot of air exchange in most planted tanks.
