I have read numerous posts about people placing egg-crate under their gravel to help support and disperse the weight of heavy rocks; makes sense.

But, whenever I visit a LFS I see their reef tanks stacked from bottom to top, front to back. The one I saw today had less than an inch of sand. The glass was cleary visible in several areas, and there was nothing used to protect the glass.

So what's the deal? Is this egg-crate thing over-kill?

Is it just paranoia?

Has anyone ever had a bad experience caused by heavy rocks?

If you have a tempered glass bottom, you can put a lot of pressure on one point before it'll crack, but when tempered glass goes, the whole sheet shatters. I'd put the egg crate down to be safe. might be unneccesary but a few bucks is a cheap insurance policy.

I can honestly say I never used anything in my non ugf tanks, but it has been years since I had a non UGF tank, and I can't remember if I actually had any heavy decor in my tanks back then. For the cost of egg crate or plexiglass, it's a really cheap insurance policy IMO.
