Problems with Eclipse 6 & Penguin 170

Greetings,

I have a Penguin 170 filter on my 20g tank, and an Eclipse 6 system. I do water changes on both tanks about 1x/week. They have been up and running since 2/04, and I've changed the filter in each one time since then, about 3 weeks ago.

At this time, both filters are functioning oddly. The Penguin filter is taking in so much water, it can't flow through the filter fast enough, and lots tends to flow back out over the intake tube. In the Eclipse, the water is now not only running over the folded tab, but over the entire filter reservoir, and back into the tank without having been filtered.

I've read my manuals, and checked Marineland's site. Other than cleaning all the filter equipment, which I've done, they don't really indicate what to do. I rinse the filters out when I do water changes to get out the extra debris, but I don't understand why they are so clogged so as to slow the water flowing through to such a degree.

If anyone has any experience with this or can offer any suggestions or advice, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks in advance.

Margaret

I dont know much about eclipse setups, but penguins always do that. Its normal. Heck mine nearly do that with no filter cartridges in at all.

I have an eclipse 6. The filter cartridges that come with the unit get clogged rather easily and the water will run over the tab like you described. What I usually do is cut a small slit in the cartridge to get the carbon out of it. Then I take a small layer of Filter floss and line it on top of the filter cartridge. All I have to do is change the filter floss about every 10 days.
