Can I possibly get several of you to list the basic meds you keep "just in case" and what they are used for? I recently set up a Q tank, but I dont have anything to treat fish.

Everything in my show tank has been very healthy, not a single loss (except for a gravel cleaner incident involving a zebra danio :( ). Lately I've been trying to keep kuhlis, but they continue to die. I'm down to 1, however, it might not survive long enough to go through any treatment.

Thanks!

Most people will say that it doesn;t hurt to keep aquarium salt and Melafix on hand at all times; these are mainly to treat minor skin infections. I at least keep anti-parasitic and antibiotic medecines on hand.

My medicine cabinet is almost empty... :D

Epsoms Salt
Usually Non-iodized tablesalt
JL Pepso food
quick cure
melafix

I keep
Aquarium salt
Metrodidazole (antiparasitic and mild antibacterial)
Epsom salts
Quick Cure
on hand at all times, just in case.
Interestingly, in the past the only times I seemed to need something is when I didn't have it and all the stores were closed...

Most meds have a shelf life so the I wouldn't go out and buy them in antipation. Good old salt and high water temps are great to start until you can hit the fish store.

Melafix seems to get a good bit of recommendations and I am using it right now on my betta, so hopefully it is as good as the claims.

Salt. That's about it. Had melafix, never saw it 'cure' anything, never saw a reduction in the time it took for wounds to heal, so keep my money in my pocket now.

Melafix - it's like fishie aloe - cures everything!

I used to have Rid-Ich. Bought it once (before I found this forum!!) and used it (it worked), I threw it out when I got pregnant for a few reason - 1. salt/heat works just as well and 2. the warning label is QUITE scary (can cause cancer and other stuff...)

I have aquarium salt, but only use it medecinally (sp?) if *knock wood, god forbid* I get an ich outbreak... I have 1 tablespoon in my tank all the time.

Salt. While this isn't actually "in" the cabinet I keep a 20gal up and running just in case I need to isolate somebody.

So, can I actually use table salt that I put on my food? Per gallon, is it 1 tsp or 1 tbsp?

no no, sorry to jump in here, i was just reading the posts.
it would have to be aquarium salt, i have Doc Wellfish's salt, although the salt granuals are really big, i usually disolve it in water first then add it.
i heard it's not good for cory's, but i haven't noticed anything major yet. (knock on wood!)
you can get some at any lfs, the small box is 60 oz. for 2.99 (cdn anyway)
hope this helps!
