View Full Version : Angel Fish
Hey all,
I currently have a small 2 footer with danios, platys, dwarf goruramis and a betta.
I am looking into getting a larger tank and keeping angel fish. i know that angel fish can get huge, about 7.5 inches, but when there fully grown will they be ok to live with 1 male betta (adult) and 2 Dwarf Gouramis?
Any help appreciated,
Thanks!!

how large is a larger tank? My dad has bred and kept angels for a long time. Curently he has 3 in a comunity tank the largest one is almost the size of your palm and is almost 2 years old. The only fish they go after and the ones they can eat(neons yum yum)but other than that if the tank is large enough they should get along with the fish you asked about.

I don't recommend it. I had a very bad experience with my community tank, I thought that a male betta and an angel would both be able to establish their own little areas in a 45g tank and wouldn't bother one another too much. The angel was larger than the betta, but not by much, so I figured neither would really come out on top and they'd just keep to their respective sides of the tank. WRONG. I hadn't done my research, and soon found that my betta was not impressed with this intruder in what he considered his tank. He was relentless, nipping the angel no matter how much it backed off. Eventually after a few days I thought they would sort it out. Half a tail, a severed ventral fin and a shredded dorsal fin later (all this overnight!), I smartened up and moved the angel to his own tank. Lesson learned, thankfully the angel forgave me, healed nicely and became the king of his own tank. I vowed from then on that any tank that contained a betta would never again contain anything else territorial that he would fight with.
Incidentally, ALL anabantids (gouramis, bettas etc.) are territorial, as are angels. The more you try to put together in one tank, the more misery you risk. If you try this mix, I'd make sure you have another option standing by in case it doesn't work.

I've never kept a betta, but the angels and the gouramis get along just fine in my dads tank. If anything the gouramis chase each other around. But I agree if you do want to try it have a tank on stand by just in case.
Hey all,
The tank i will probrably buy will be at least 180 litres, And i plan to keep one angel fish, as i heard that it takes some good fish keeping skills to keep them in pairs, as they pair up...???
My brother used to keep 1 parrot (about 4 inches long) 3 silver sharks (3.5-4 inches long) in a tank with 2 dwarf gouramis, oh yeah, and thinking about it, a small angel (About 1 inch) and none of the fish had any problems with each other whatsoever....
Thanks for the good advice, Keep it coming...
:-)
