I'm looking at going for a sand-like substrate, and i was wondering if there is any particular brand/size i should go for.

Fish currently in my tank are

5 tiber barbs
3 clown loaches
1 redtailed shark

Right now im using a relatively small sized gravel (pea sized on average) with a small amount of larger gravel mixed in (i'd say cashew sized).

Second question is where is a good online store where i can order it from (LFS is crap and Petco has nothing of interest)

I have used play sand with very good results. Go to your local Home Depot, Lowes, Sutherlands, Ace Hardware, and etc and get a 50 lb bag for really cheap. I paid $2.00 for my bad at Lowes. Use the same rule with sand as with the gravel. 1 pound of sand per 1 gallon of water. If you have 10 gallons, then put in 10 pounds.

Only thing is you are prolly gonna want to start that tank completely from scratch. Changing substrate is no easy task. I so I'd recommend you think about it first before proceeding.

Anthoer thing to keep in mind, just like gravel, sand must be cleaned. I used a cloth pillow case and stuck it under a faucet for a while until the water ran clear. Takes a while, but gets the job done. Hopes this helps.

Ciao!

hate to bring up an old topic, but, i also am intrested in this. and, i have decided to do it. Is there really nothhing special to du, except water changes, and wash the gravel? i guess ill be worried about my filter, 1st off. i have some old pantyhose to protect it from little sand bits.

anything else ill have to watch out for?

Be sure to get a needle or other thin object and stir the sand with it. If the sand sits undisturbed for to long it can release poisonous gas and harm your fish. Don't stir then sand to vigorously or esle you may have some cloudy water on your hands. Just get the needle and run and indirect path through the sand.
