Today was my maitenance day and since I have sand as my substrate, I stir it weekly to prevent the build up of anerobic gasses. But it seems every time i stir it the water gets REALLY cloudy and it's making me angry. When I first bought the substrate (Tahitian Moon Sand) I did the bucket overflow, stir the sand, with hose technigue to clean it, I did this for about 20 to 30 minutes and the water in the bucket appeared pretty clear.

Today I also did a 35% water change like I do every week along with siphoning up the crud on the bottom.

Do you guys have any tips on getting rid of cloudy water. The tank looks very poor and I am unsure on what to do.

The tank is a 20g and the substrate is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches deep.

How heavily are you stiring the sand?

When I am using sand as a substrate I tend to just syphon on the surface (hold the vac about half inch above the sand) to pick up any detritus on the surface and then just used to run a knitting needle gently through it in indiscrimate pattern to move it around a little.

Maybe your are being little too aggresive with the cleaning? And until the sand re-settles that is what is causing the cloudiness...

I recommend you get and use a Vortex D-1 diatom filter. You won't believe the results you will get.....
