View Full Version : OK, I bought Flourite...
Even the directions on the bag sound confusing, but can I mix it with gravel to make a deeper bed, or should I just go flourite only. I like the color, but it's too uniform and I prefer a mix of tones in my "aquarium palette".
TIA

For me, I'd go 100% Flourite. If Onyx sand was not an option I would have gone with the Flourite. You can mix the Flourite though..
I mixed my flourite with sand - maybe 60% Flourite and 40% sand...something like that. It looks great - a little sand can really 'brighten up' Flourite.
How much did you buy? And what size tank do you have? 100% flourite is the best option, but your definately can mix them if you want to lighten it up. You're going to love the stuff.

I am going to be getting flourite, my setup will be roughly 2in of flourite underneath 1-2in of gravel. Does this sound good??? I read in several places that it was best to have a flourite layer underneath your gravel layer or something like that. And about how much would i need for a 55gal tank???
I used 4 bags in my 55 gal. I like a deep substrate and I used all Flourite though so I guess you can estimate from there if you're going to mix. Some folks like approx. one pound per gallon, but a 55 has a small footprint so you can get away with a little less.

Hi Len,
I thinking of doing something similar (I like a deep substrate, too) in a 55. How many pounds of flourite did you use to get the depth you want?

My tank is a 65 gallon heavily planted all flourite substrate....I would recommend 100% flourite because if you mix it with something else, you will never be able to get rid of the other substrate if you want to go all flourite in the future.
IF you want to add colour, there is flourite red that you can mix with your regular flourite.
I am assuming that if you are going for a flourite substrate, that you want a nice planted tank.....for me, i have so much plants that I can barely see the substrate anyways, except for the front but flourite looks so natural and beautiful anyways...

Each bag weights about 7kg (more or less 15 lbs). Seeing how he used 4 bags, you can do the math.
