I saw one of this fish at the local fish store for $$$$. It is really beautiful but they had a price tag of $48 so of course I want to do my homework on it. Doesn't seem to be much on the net about them. Has anybody had these fish and can tell me about their temperment in a community tank, general info on this fish and if this is the going price on these fish? It was also called a "roseline shark" but looks like it is a member of the barb family? Does it fin nip? OK for hardy plants? OK with large tetras and boesmani rainbows?

Thanks

*sigh* It is a cool fish, but the price!

I've put investments like this in fish before and had it blow up on me (like the couple of fancy plecos I got that hid all the time so I couldn't see my investment!) Ughhh, if I spend that kind of money on a fish I want to see it! Also, the fish store I saw it at has only a 24 hour 100% credit fish guarantee (if it dies) then 50% credit for a week. I've gotten other fish from them before with mostly good results though (except for a striped kuhli loach that I had to make a mad dash to make the 24 hour guarantee for, darn kuhli loaches). Be my luck he'll be one of those onery mean ones and beat up everybody in my tank! I would like to have something different in my tank that not everybody has though.

Just brought one of these guys home this weekend after doing some research. Price wise, they were on sale for CAD$18 at Big Als on Kennedy Road (for the Toronto folks out there) and in great shape. They were labeled Denison Barb.

From all I've read and observed, they are quite peaceful and though they are fairly active, they don't dart around rapidly spooking others in the community. They just sort of glide around.

One concern I do have though, is that I've read a couple of references indicating that they may eat certain plants. Having said this, both LFS locations where I've seen these guys (BA's Newmarket & BA's Kennedy Rd.) on display, had them in planted community tanks.

I'd love to hear others experience with Puntius denisonii and in particular, with respect to keeping them in a planted aquarium.

Iv'e seen them in planted tanks before, and in a really nice asian themed planted tank at big al's here in Burnaby. They're quickly becomming one of the most popular fish in the hobby right now, but they're high price tag is dampening it's success. There are rumours however of spawning success in thailand by using hormone injections. It comes from one small area of india, in sri lanka I think.

I have mine in a discus planted tank

And he/she just cruises around like a bull shark! (getting big with all the good food I give the discus, I'd say he's 4.5 to 5 inches now! $18 CAD is a great price! They are still around $40 - $50 US here. I got mine with a lot of trades a last year. Very peaceful, though like you say, they may intimidate skittish shy fish. Also, mine only eats what comes to the middle water layer.

At the LFS, they had a school in a tank all moving in unison, what a sight!

Thanks for your replies.

Wow tpl*co! $40-50 US is pretty serious money for a marine specimen but for freshwater, that's just insane. Hopefully these guys will be captive bred in greater numbers so that we see more realistic pricing.

Any other experiences with planted tanks out there?

Cheers.....
Joe

They are a schooling fish that get 6" or more, so they are best for someone with a large tank and lots of money to spend on a nice sized school. I saw some locally for cheap, but don't have a tank for them. They get a bit big for my liking anyway.

*sigh* I won't tell you what I just spent then on...

some young discus  . I must admit though that this guy was up there as one of my most expensive fish though.
