Turn off Wet/Dry filter @ night?

It is ok to turn of the WD filter over night? I set the timer that shut it down @ 10 PM and turn it on @ 8 AM. Is this going to cause anything as far as bacterias in the WD filter?

Thanks.

Bad idea. Not only do you risk losing some of your biological filtration capacity, but you also risk exposing your fish to a nightly build-up of ammonia. Filters, especially biofilters, should be run 24/7.

HTH,
Jim

I'm curious to know why you want to turn it off at all? The Bio material in the filiter needs to remain damp at all times. Turning if off for any amount of time would that would allow the bio material to dry would kill off your good bacteria. I get nervous shutting my system down to clean the tank... :-)

What are you trying to accomplish by turning it off at nite?

Hermxl1, I bet CalPolyPomona hates loud filters just like you, and wants to shut it off because it's loud at night.
When I got my first tank back in 400BC, I had a UGF with powerheads. I thought it would be okay to shut them off at night, since the noise in my room bothered me. Thank goodness the LFS man said not to!

400BC  !!!!!!!

Yeah, that's the reason why I don't recommend putting them in bed rooms. I did that as a kid about 380BC and kicked it out about a week later. And this was one of those lil supposedly quiet blow pumps.

My 55g tank sits on a plain open metal frame stand and appearently my 2yr old got under it and turned the power switch off. Because it has 2 penguins on it and I recently done a water change it was not making a lot of noise. The lights were on because they are on a timer and not on the power strip. My guess is it was off for maybe 3 hours at the most but when I looked at me 2 big Pacus you would have thought someone had a pillow over there gills, cuz they were breathing soooooo hard. I thought they had been running a fish marathon when I looked at the tank. Finnally I realized something was wrong and hit the switch.

Lesson to learn here: Fish need air too. :-)
Don't turn your filter off.

I have two 55s, a 5, a 10 and a temporary 25 gallon box in my room. Water noise, and even pump noise doesn't bother me that much.

I generally don't even shut down my filters when I'm cleaning the pads. IT would be a very, VERY bad idea to shut down at night... If it were absolutely nessasary though you should add a Whisper or some other quiet filter just to keep the water circulated in addition to whatever you already have.

I actually WANT noise in my bedroom. After spending 10 years with computers near my bed making their sounds at night, I've grown used to having something make some kind of noise. The only time I turn off my filter is if I'm feeding the fish brine shrimp or something like that... and then it's only off for about 5 minutes until the fish suck down all their delicious meal :)
