I was looking at the clowns species profile and it says they need to be a salinity of 1.023-1.027.. on my swing arm hydrometer it says the optiomal range is 1.020-1.023.. which is correct.. right now i am running about 1.0225... mixed up a 1/2 cup full of instant ocean in a 1/2 gallon of water.. going to put that in to try and raise it just a little.. until i hear from you guys..

As for so many other things in this hobby, people have many different opinions on salinity. Some say to keep it as high as natural ocean salinity (35ppt or 1.0264).....however many people prefer to keep it a little lower because of the BELIEF that fish are less stressed at a lower salinity. Also parasites have a harder time in lower salinity.
Nevertheless....you also need to consider if refering to "reef" or "fish only" system. In a fish only system salinity can be kept a little lower than in a reef system.
For a reef I would recommend a specific gravity of 1.025, at leasts that where i keep it. Fish only a little less, maybe 1.024.
Of course if for example you only want to keep fish and else from a specific region it would make perfect sense to keep salinity at something other than 1.025. ie. red sea or brackish.
good luck

I keep both my reef and FOWLR tank at 1.024 - 1.026.

I have heard from many, many people, and many different fish stores that this is the optimal balance.

If there are invertebrates involved, keep it near the level of natural seawater, 1.024-1.026.

In a fish only, anything above 1.020 is fine. Breeders often keep their salinity at 1.020 to reduce cost and inhibit parasites.
