Hi

I've got this betta named Midnight. I've had him for half a year or so. I've tried once or twice before to give him a 5g tank, which was the plan from the get-go, after he was ready to leave his 2.5g tank. I like to use the 2.5g's to acclimate them at first because they're the perfect size and, I think, they provide a less scary transition into a filtered, big tank. At any rate, each time I put him in the new tank, he'd get very upset and would hide a lot, lose much of his appetite and would develop fin rot. I know it was not the water condition. So, after those few times, I would put him back into his 2.5g and let him heal back up, which he would. A week or two ago, I decided to give it one last try (he had been looking and acting very robust and healthy). Well, he must not like bigger tanks (even with a multiltude of different filter flows) - because he developed fin rot yet again. I've since given up on the idea and have decided that he likes his 2.5g tank just fine and that I don't want to jeopardize his health simply because I think he wants a bigger tank.

So, I guess this all goes to show that not all creatures are created equal! You've got to figure out what works for each individual. Some bettas I have would go stir crazy in a 2.5g. This one, apparently, prefers it.

He's been making his first bubble nest (that I've found) since moving him back into his little tank (which I've put next to the desk so I can see him all the time, which is nice).

Just thought I'd share a few pictures I just took, while I'm at it. Look at his fins They're all jagged, but they are healing fast. When he is healthy, his fins are SO long. Longer than most I see on "regular" bettas. I kind of wonder if he didn't get mis-shipped or was an ex-breeder stock, based on his color, form and finnage.

So here he is:

To show that it's not just the flash that is making him such a beautiful color (No flash)

His recent pride and joy, It is getting bigger by the minute!:

Can you tell why he's named Midnight? LOL

Hey now, don't forget that these little guys aren't exactly open water fish. The more swimming they have to do the more their fins get shredded so a good amount of current in a betta tank is actually a bad thing. Great picture by the way! You can tell he is loved and well taken care of. ;)

Bettas can do great in currents. But obviously midnight just doesn't like it.

Have you tried using a sponge/ bubble filter. My bettas seem to like that in their 5 gallon.

I just bought a new betta after Darius (who looked exactly like your betta Midnight) passed away. He is all red and has taken to the new 5 gallon from his cup really well.

Midnight is beautiful; great story, too. Don't you just love their cute little pug noses? His colours remind me of my first betta, Bixby but, like TKOS, I had to get my new bettas with completely different colours.

Thanks guys and gals:) He says thanks for all of the compliments!

I haven't tried a sponge filter, but I used one of those little internal whisper filters set on the lowest setting and he just plain didn't like it. He'd either stay behind it or as far away into the opposite corner as he could get.

All of my other bettas enjoy their tanks/currents. A betta can surely do just fine and thrive in a currented tank, providing that they are properly acclimated. This tank has a fairly large current and this guy's pretty darn happy and has never had any fin damage whatsoever. (As for them being open water fish, you might be surprised how big rice paddies actually are! :) )

(Thats one of my planted 10g's a few weeks ago. It's grown in since then:) )

Kveeti- I adore those little faces and that is the perfect word for it - 'pug'. I also tried to get a few different color bettas. I saw a yellow/orange one in the store way back when that I thought would look great compared to my red one, but when I got home it was as red as the other one! The store lighting really played a number on it LOL.

Krazee - Good luck with your fishie!

Wow! Beauty fish and your 10 gallon is  gorgeous! I am really impressed with how thick the plants are in that tank. You must be very good at planting them close or have some intense light. Either way looks great!

Keep up the excellent fishkeeping.

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the aquaria hobby and have never owned any bettas. I've had my 55 gallon with mixed tropical fish for about a 5 weeks now. I was wondering, what is a bubble nest? I see it in the picture, but what is it? :)

Also Leopardess, your tank is packed full of plants. How'd you get them so close together? Is that a grass in the front, or are there just a bunch of seperate plants planted very close together?
