A friend who has a spare 2 foot long aquarium he does not want has said he will give it to me, it has everything apart from a stand. I know water is heavy so I'll need to make a good strong stand for it but I'm unsure as to what the most robust design for a stand to support it would be.

Any advice? Does anyone know of anywhere where I could look at some plans or designs for aqaurium stands?

Thanks for the link, that looks really helpful.

I used 3/4" pine shelving that I bought from Home Depot. Then I just cut into the sizes I needed for the tank and built the whole stand with it. Worked out good because the wood was pretty cheap.

Whatever you decide with be careful of knots. They hurt the strength of the wood and can cause it to twist as well. I think 2x3s would be fine for that small of a tank, 2x4s are often used when building 55g + stands.

or you could be crazy and set up 4x6s for a 40 gallon like me. but then it did survice the last minro earthquakes.

Somebody just posted one they made last week. It's for a 20gal... so that SHOULD be 24"... I think.

yes, it SHOULD be 24" but I messed up and its actually only 20". you can see the 2" overhang on each end, but I think it should be ok.

In hind site, I should have bought another 2x4 and cut the right lengths, cause now the tank isnt wide enough for a 10g sump that was gonna go down there.

Good point about a sump, I think it would be a good idea for me to make my stand with the thought of adding a sump to it later. So I need to remember to make the doors big enough etc.

What is the minimum recommend size for a sump tank?

how large is the tank you want the slump for?

The larger the slump the better but the tank your going to get a slump for may/may not need one.

Is this going to be SW/FW?

I have a 55 gallon and I don't have a sump but on my 190 I have a wet/dry with a large sump(about 80 gallons)

Its a 2ft long tank so somewhere around 60+ litres I think. Although I've not seen the tank yet to know if it is a all in one heater, filter system or not.

I've heard from others about their sumps but I'm not sure as to the reason as to why you'd want one, ie the advantages of having one...

A 2 ft long tank, depending on height, is either 20 or 29 gallons, I believe. As for why you'd want a sump, the larger volume of water you have, the less likely something is to screw up your water parameters. Adding a fish to a 5gal aquarium might kick the ammonia way up and get it really stressed. Adding it to a 20+10 gal aquarium is gonna have much less of an effect. Same with pH crashes and anything else related to water chemistry. I don't think you really need to worry about a sump with a FW aquarium of that size.
