how common are they?
I haven't heard that much about them.

I have a pair of them and they are about 4.5" i'm pretty sure i have a Male and Female.
I'm hoping to keep them as a pair and (fingers crossed) even breed them.

anyone have a black belt?
whats the story on them?

they're pretty common. really aggressive especially towards each other (can't we all just get along?). never tried breeding them. the coloring gets a better as the get bigger.

I have one that's about 4 1/2" long (SL) that I'm starting to believe is female. I only assume this due to roundness of fins. My Blackbelt is partnered up with a 5 1/2" Jack Dempsey in this tank who is the dominant fish. They get along fairly well ever since about 1" to 2" long each. I enjoy the fact that my Blackbelt seems to be a midwater swimmer and spends most of his time swimming openly. My JD is somewhat the "norm" and likes to stay low and usually in caves and such. The JD will come out eventually after he sees my BB getting all the attention though! The best part of the Blackbelts is that they look better with age. This seems to be opposite of many fish which are prettier as juveniles. Give us all some info if you breed yours:)
