I am moving this over to the cichlid forum. You will probably get more input over there.

I guess I am confused. Texas cichlid and convicts are two different fish. Both are freshwater and don't use salt?

can you post a picture of your fish? The Green Texas cichlid's scientific name is Herichthys carpintis. The regular Texas is Herichthys cyanoguttatum and look like this:

Is this what yours looks like? s so then they like a ph in the 7.0-7.5 range and temps in the 75-80 range. No salt!

You can use a bit of salt... Just make sure it has no iodine in it like table salt. I have seen a product called "Cichlid Salt" in the stores so you should be able to find some of that. The fish you claim to have do not make bubble nests so whatever he/she was doing was something else.

I am very confused over the number of fish you have. I have Texas cichlids, convicts and Jack Dempseys. Neither of these three species build a bubble next and none of them require salt in their water.

As far as using salt with iodine in it, the debate goes on! Some say it is OK, some say it is not.

there isnt anywhere near enough iodine to hurt anything in your tank, you will kill the fish with too much salt wayyyy before the iodine is at near lethal levels. i had sooo much salt in my hospital tank, because of a young kid just dumping it in, that i was getting MAJOR salt creap and salt evap. on everything!! and the fish were fine!
