What is your experience with live plants and sand? I've read that they don't thrive in sand, but my Anacharis does really well in it. It has grown almost 4 feet in 3months! My sand is play sand.

Anachris will grow well without any substrate because it does not set down a real root system; it draws its nutrients directly from the water column. This is why you can float it.

I would not use sand if I were planning on planting a tank. If you just want to keep things like floating plants and anachris, you will be fine to keep your sand. Otherwise, put in some Schultz's Aquatic Plant Soil (aka Profile) or Flourite.

Perfectly normal:)

I'm having a decent amount of luck using sand in my planted tanks. The biggest problem I have experienced is getting plants established in it, as the sand doesn't hold them down as well as gravel.

Another option is to have a two layer substrate. Flourite on the bottom, sand on the top.

If you use a two-layer substrate, won't the sand and flourite eventually become mixed together? I was planning on doing the same thing, but someone here at the forum said the two layers wouldn't last long.

Sand, especially fine sand is not the best substrate for a planted tank.
A better option is the small mm. natural gravel that is very inexpensive and available just about everywhere in LFSs. It mixes well with Flourite and looks very nice.
I use it in two of my tanks and you'd never even know it's not all Flourite.
In answer to your question above......yes it will end up all mixed together over time, from the planting/moving of plants and objects within the substrate.
