New 50gal plan

Hey all, the wifes' getting a dog so I get a new tank. I am thinking of a Jack Dempsey or a pair of firemouths. Question is, are these ok for the size I'm thinking? I'll have an emperor 400 filtering...would I need to add an additional filter (other than for the backup reason). I would love a Jag (thanks MoJo) but I think the 50 would be to small and Oscars are not my fav.

How about Honduran Red Points (http://www.cichlidae.com/tanks/t060/default.php)

I they are cool fish and will do well in the 50g.

Thanks, not to much info on the red point part of its name but the latin name is for the convict cichlid. If I go with a Jak or GT then a few convicts would work until the other fish get to big and more than likley do away with the convicts.

Are you talking about moving out the convicts or the fish doing them in? Convicts are pretty good at holding their own!
