Well, he's five years old. I don't think i've heard of a betta living that long.

I had a betta for 4 1/2 years... and the he started 'sitting' on a plant or on the gravel... and one morning he was gone. 5 years is a great long life for a betta!!! He's old, and just resting his bones, sitting on the gravel. I'd venture to guess that as long as he's still eating, he's not suffering, but that's just my totally non professional advice.

congrats on providing your betta with such good care that he's lived such a long & healthy life! maybe you could put him in a shallow tank so he wouldn't have to swim so far to the top of the tank?

steph ~ I'm pretty sure that as long as he's still eating, he's not in any pain or suffering... Someone else mentioned maybe putting him in a smaller/shallower tank so he doesn't have to swim far to get some air... that's not a bad idea, if you have something shallower to put him in. Good luck, and just keep in mind that 5 years is very old for a betta, and you've provided for him very well and kept him very happy!
