Hey guys,

I just broke up and algae wafer and put in my 20gal community for my Corydoras Sterbai, when I put it in, my Glow Lights when crazy and tried to gobble it up. This worrys me that they are hungry, they go nuts when I feed them and seem like they're hungry the rest of the day, should I start feeding them twice a day with smaller portions? is it good that they are hungry? Any advice would help.

yeah, that should be all good. its better to have ur fish a little hungry then to over feed them. i feed my fish twice a day in small portions and it looks like they're always hungry. so yeah, i say its alright

The day before you do a water change, try this: feed the fish a small amount every other hour, for a total of 6 feedings that day. The fish will go crazy with each feeding, and it will look like they are just starving, based on their response. Of course, this is way more food than adult fish need, and way more waste than the filter can handle--that's why you'll want to do a large water change and good cleaning the next day.

Very, very few fish must have daily feedings. Fish that are primarily herbivores benefit from being able to graze most the day--this is close to how they feed in the wild. Big predators, though, seldom eat all they can more than every other day or so--feeding them daily can cause serious problems. The vast majority of fish will be fine being fed daily, at most, two small feedings daily. And of course, with more feedings comes more maintenance--you must clean the tank more frequently, especially in smaller (less than 55 g) tanks.

It's their "JOB" to act like this, it's just what they do. If you fed them 4 times a day they would still act like this.

If you want to feed them twice a day, that's fine and totally up to you, just make sure you are dividing their feeding and not increasing it. It is much easier to overfeed than underfeed.

Edit.... oops OrionGirl and I answered at the same time, and her answer was better.

I totally agree. Hungry fish = healthy fish. I used to feed mine twice a day, now I feed once in the morning. My fish beg all day long (I've never met a platy that claimed it was full), but they seem very healthy and the tank stays cleaner, longer.
