I have a problem! im trying to remove my baby kribs from the community tank, but when the net goes in the babies hide in the gravel, making it impossible to catch them. can i use the gravel vac to suck them up? would that be too hard on them? any info would be appreciated.

I don't know how delicate Krib fry are, so I hesitate to answer, but I do know that I transfer my guppies from the top adult tank to the lower fry tank with a 3/4" hose and that is far more violent than a gravel vac. I have yet to damage any of them to my knowledge, and I have an extremely (too high) survival rate with the guppy fry.

Go to the store and buy a large turkey baster... I got one for about $3 at my local grocery store, but they probably have them at walmart or target too. That's the best way, imho... not as rough as a gravel vac.

Good luck!

I've used both methods - turkey baster and siphon - but only on platy fry and once on a kuhli loach who'd gotten into a place I could only reach with a siphon hose (little bugger!). None suffered any ill effects. IMHO, a net is actually a pretty harsh way to move fry around when you think about it - I think the siphon/baster methods are gentler, since no net material touches their slime coat and they're never out of the water for even a second.
