Today I had my first ever highschool sport event. Im in cross country. The first thing I want to say is biking is way better. Anyways, I was the 5th freshman out of around 25-30. I was 4th on my team. It was 3200, and I ran it in like 12:06-12:15. I didnt look at the clock at the finish, I was wiped out. We are in division one.

Pretty impressive for you first competition Andy. Good job. Especially considering that it's not a sport that you're really excited about. Too bad your school doesn't have some type of cycling team.

I'm up to about 100 - 110 miles per week on my bike. That's mostly commuting miles. I leave home early so that I can extend my morning commute, ride straight home and back at lunch, and usually ride straight home again in the evenings. I'm not in any type of competitive form, but I have managed to lose 18 pounds in 2 months.

110 miles is great. I think you should find some sort of race in your area and do it. There should be like different classes. Like a novice, and up. Where im at its called citizen. Then its sport, comp, and elite. Im in sport. Citizen is very laid back so its great for a first time racer. I think you should try something like this a try, I think you would be surprised.

I havent been riding at all lately. Cross country is way to tiring. It doesnt really seem to help mountain biking a lot either. My last race was horrible.

I am on the Alterra coffee team. I dont know if thats like a national product or not. Im pretty sure it is but anyways, they want me to start getting some younger members, like my age. Then we could start up a teen team. I am the youngest on the team, and everybody else is getting older(obviously). They dont want the team to die out, so they need the younger members to get it going again.

Although I have a great deal of respect for racers, I don't have the slightest interest in actually getting involved in competitive cycling. Besides, I'm still at least 20 pounds heavier than I should be, and even after I lose that weight I don't think my cheapo Walmart Scwhinn mountain bike with 2 inch road slicks would stand a chance against anybody on a decent road bike. ;)

What I do plan on, is working on my endurance so that I can eventually do a solo century ride. My longest ride ever was 80 miles, but that was about 20 years ago. My longest non-stop ride in the last few months was about 24 miles and left me pooped.

Have you ever checked out www.cyclingforums.com? They've got a lot of stuff that I think you'd be interested in. I've been checking it out for a month or two now and have already learned quite a bit.

I think that the only way cross country will help your cycling is by increasing your cardio fitness. However the fact that you're training your leg muscles to act in a different motion might hamper your cycling. Of course, if you ever decide to add swimming to your training you could start thinking about triathlons. You do know that that's what Lance Armstrong did for a while, right?
