I have a 125 gal tank and I use external filters ,I know alot of people say a wet and dry is better but I only have 10 fish, most small and a couple of med size, lots of live rck, no corals as its a fish only tank
My question is this for those that use or know of the external filters with the bio wheels
I have had my tank going for about a year, everything is well, in fact most of my fish have doubled there size
My question is this, today at the fish store I mentioned I use filters with carbon ,I was told thta is not good to do as the carbon removes alot of good things out of the water and should only be used for fresh water tanks
Makes wonder if this is true as like I said tank up for about a year, have not had any problems and why does emperior give you carbon filters with the unit

If you read current books on the subject, you will see a lot of opinion and conflict, but the bottom line is that some people use carbon all the time, some never use it, and both can have spectacular, healthy tanks. I use it all the time, and the corals and fish don't complain. In many tanks, it is probably not necessary, but it probably doesn't hurt either.

It sounds like you're using the "Pollett Method" One of the posters here strongly recommends external filters and a lot of live rock, and it works very well for him.

I took my carbon out yesterday but now m wondering if that was a bad move, everything looks good and I do have about 100 lbs of rock ,I have two 400 filters and 1 280, maybe I will use carbon in one of the 400's and leave the other two just filter or do you think I should use carbon in all?

I don't think that the carbon will end up removing too much good stuff, but on the other hand I don't think it is needed unless you are wanting to remove bad stuff. If you think contamenents are getting in the water then you might want to use it, but in that case you really have to be diligent and replace it every couple of weeks as it really doesn't last much longer than that. So it sure can be costly.
