Hello,

I have a quick question. Can someone recommend some fish that I can place in a small 2 gallon tank. It is one of those small eclipse tanks for starters that I am going to place on my daughter's nightstand (trying to get her into the world of fish like her pop). The "All-in-one" unit has an undergravel filter, air pump, and a light; no heater though so I will need fish that will do well at room temperature; of course I can probably get a small heater if needed. I was thinking of a beta, goldfish, or maybe some neon tetra's ? I was thinking neon tetra's that way she can get a couple since they stay small. Any help or information would be apprecaited.

Thanks!

Most certainly NOT neons (2 gal, no heater) Even with central heat and air, not havaing a heater really limits any kind of "tropical" fish.

You could do a beta.

Contrary to the "fishbowl" legacy, goldfish need ALOT of space, they just survive in ridiculous conditions because they are tanks. A goldfish or 2 would prolly live but they would not be happy. Please dont do this.

A small school of guppies or "white cloud mountain minnows" would probably work...

Dear Oto......

Define "small" school of guppies please? I am cycling a 5 gallon with two danios, already the zebra danio is harassing the spotted danio. But I was hoping to have guppies eventually. How many guppies could I keep in a 5 gallon? Will the Danios play nice or will I have to return them?

Thanks for your input,

Mari

A betta is a tropical fish and really would prefer a heater.

Mari:

Danios are nuts and they like big groups and lots of swimming space. I would take them back when you are done cycleing. My sister has 3 guppies (1 male 2 females) in a 5 gallon and they seem happy as anything. You might be able to put more than 3 in.

Cribbinator:

A betta should be okay in your tank but Guppies are probally best. You could try white clouds but they like to be in big schools. If it were me, id go with the guppies.

Thanks for the replies.

Now if Guppies are OK then why aren't Neon's if I get a heater ? Don't they both get to about the same size ? Are Guppies just heartier fish ?

I am suprised that they even make a 1 gallon tank; don't know what fish they expect you to put in those. I was going to get the 5 gallon but it wouldn't fit on her table.

Thanks again for the information.

Neons are pretty sensitive fish, and like to be in groups of at least five or six, so I think they're not the best choice... guppies are available in some gorgeous colours, and don't need to be in groups, so I'd say they'd make a better choice.
