I have a 56 gallon corner reef and fish tank, and ever since a media change, my fluval 404 has been making a racket. Ive tried a dozen things to get it right...all sorts of techniques to try to eliminate potential air pockets, etc....and it just won't go away. So, rather than endure the prospect of shipping it back to Hagen and waiting for a replacement or whatnot, I have decided to get another filter.

Please let me know what you think would be a good value, user-friendly canister filter. I am also willing to just buy another fluval 404, if it's worth a shot, and just chalk this one up as a bad experience.

Thanks!

If you have a good protein skimmer you can go without a mechanical filter. But this depends on what kind of fish you have. For example, If you had a lionfish which eats a lot and makes a bunch of waste, you want to remove this quickly to prevent high nitrates. And if you have nothing but corals, a few invertabrates like brittle stars and plants, you can easily go without a mechanical filter and maybe even without a protein skimmer.

I only use a big filter sock(I think 100 microns) that traps debris going into my sump and a protein skimmer. I have two filter socks so once one is dirty, around once every month, I replace it with the clean one and clean the dirty. This only works with a sump but has worked fine for me. You could look at reviews online for filters, www.reefcentral.com is a good place for reviews
