Im drained my 90 salt cleaned it and will start setting it back up but as a fresh tank this weekend. Im using sand for the bottom. the type of fish i dont know (either chiclids or some small community fish, for sure want a eel) I want live plants. My Question is I have a canister filter rated for a 200 gallon tank, is this alright for my tank? what all should i put in the canister? I have 5 trays.

thanks.

oh any ideas on what to stock is welcome?

If it is rated for a 200g tank it should be OK but I would like to know what the gph flow rate is and what brand of filter. Instructions can vary from filter to filter but in most cases the water flows from course filter media to finer media, then to a biological media, another fine media, and then back into the tank.

Look at this adobe link for a fluval: http://hagen.com/pdf/aquatic/Fluval_MSF_Manual.pdf and another for a RENA FilStar XP http://www.aquariumpharm.com/filterfaqs.html

As far as stoking goes, only you know what you like. You have enough tank for many different fish but not enough for the truly big guys like oscars and bigger to reach their full size and live comfortably.

If you have lightly stocked cichlids or else small communty fish and live plants that filter will probably be fine. If you are having messier fish then think about adding a second filter, perhaps a HOB.

Many cichlids (espceially those from Africa) are not good with plants so you will probably have to look at South American Cichlid. Of course many of those are diggers and constantly uproot plants. So a good bit of planning is a good idea. Come up with some plans and run them by us.

is that bad? I thought most werent bypass free. Right now im using 2 trays with fine of filter pad.1 with a biger coarse bio spone. 1 of carcoal and 1 with bio rings.

I believe the Filstars and Eheim Classics are. I have not seen any info that
says otherwise.

I also have a Cascade canister. For some strange reason the TOP SURFACE of my topmost basket (white pad/floss) is dirtier than the bottom surface of the second lowest basket (white pad/floss).

Water is "supposed" to flow from the bottom basket upward.....I complained to
Penn Plax and was told earlier production runs had a seal problem where the pump head meets the top basket. They sent me a new seal, it has helped a
little...but still has not corrected the problem.
