ive got a 75g tank.i want to have a colony of calvus, with some cyprichromis leptosoma, paracyps nigripinnis and a pair of julies. could you give me numbers of how many calvus to start with, and how many cyprichromis leptosoma and how many paracyps. nigripinnis, and i presume a pair of julies. whats this about buying a shoal of young ones and letting them grow on?how many should this 'shoal' contain and how long will it take for pairs to form?
cheers for all your help everyone saving me lots of heart ache for the future!

I don't know about the Paras. I know when I try to breed Tangs I go for a group of 6. Calvus are very hard to grow out. They take forever. In the future I am just going to buy adults. You may want to think about that. It can take over two years for them to put on just a bit of size. For around $60 you can probably buy a breeding pair and save yourself some time. I don't normally recommend this, because half the fun is growing them out. But, calvus are the exception in my opinion. You buy 6 and two years later you may have them to 2 inches in length if you are lucky. Hope this helps.

Cyps and paracyps will interbreed so they shouldn't be kept together. Calvus will get along with either.

No personal experience just from hearing from others experiences on another forum (a very reputable one specializing in Africans). The general consensus was that there was a fair chance of cyps and paracyps interbreeding because they are fairly close genetically and there body shape is very close and coloring of certain species are close. Some paracyps are also open water swimmers such as P. brieni.
