ive been told that firefish should be kept in groups... how many should i keep together and can i mix purple firefish and regular firefish? thanx for any info.

You need to do just the opposite. Unlike most of the other "wormfish" (eg, dartfish, bar gobies), firefish will fight in groups. You can occasionally find an established, mated pair that will coexist, but you can't keep them in large groups. Constant fighting will result in a number of them jumping out of the tank or succumbing to stress-based diseases.

i have 2 fire fish in my tank and they seem to be happy :)

they will occasionally pair up and will school when young but once they hit sexual maturity they will kill each other in the confines of a tank and usually do this by pairing up and ganging up on the remainders. mine has done great alone for years.

I had/have one, he kept jumping in the sump and hiding behind things, haven't seen him in about a week, but no spike so I hope he is OK.
