In my nano I can not seem to get the PH above 8.0 the large tank is always at 8.2-8.4 w/o buffer. I use buffer in the nano now and then but I never seen it above 8.0 is this a cause for concern? How can I correct it?

pH 8.0 is OK, but it might be worth trying to figure out what is keeping it down. What usually reduces pH is either too much CO2 (either because of low circulation or high CO2 in the room air) or low alkalinity. What happens if you take a sample of your water and aerate it vigorously? If the pH goes up, you have a problem with CO2.

You are adding buffer, but you don't mention your alkalinity. How do you know that your buffering is low?

That was the short answer. It so happens that there's a much better explanation of pH issues in this month's RefKeeping online: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-09/rhf/index.htm

If you have a lot of critters it's probaly their waste that's lowering your ph and alk. More frequent water changes will help with the problem. You could also try to remove some critters to another tank. How long has your nano been set up?

The Nano has been up for about a month now. I started it with 10-12 lbs of live rock from the LFS own reef tank and 1lbs of live sand and 5lbs of non live sand. I am almost ready to move fish from it to my main display tank. I just need to run to home depot and get some egg crate to cover the tank.

guessing this is a 10 gal

add some more live sand make sure you have about 150gph in water circulation. do you use a high quality salt mix?

Its is a standards 12 gallon nano its the one with the built in wet/dry in back. I use Instant Ocean. My LFS only carries that and Coralife. But the Coralife is only in a Large bucket that cost nearly $50 so I just buy the bags as they are more afordable at the time I need them. I think it may have to do with the critters in there. there are 3 fish 2 of which will move to a better place soon. snails, hermits, a very scary worm that i just seen tonight. and little itty bitty bug things. It could also be the o2 thing though the clown in there has been acting funny the past couple of days like skimming the top of the water and such. I am schedualed to do a water change saturday but I may have to push it forward.
