Bulging Eye

One of my large oscars has managed to develop a bulging eye syndrome. Can anyone give me a clue as to what causes it and how to remedy it? Thanks in advance.

According to fishyfarmacy, "pop eye" is caused by a kidney infection and should be treated with erythromycin. If you read the next symptom on the page, it can also be a symptom of dropsy or Aeromonas.

Popeye is often associated with water quality issues. Test your water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Review your maintenance on the tank--did it slack a little during the holidays? This might be the cause of the problem. Medicating is needed to clear up the problem, but diligent water changes should prevent a reocurrence.

Are you sure your O has pop-eye? Oscars do have eyes that bulge a bit, especially as they get larger. Usually pop-eye affects one eye at a time, this is not the rule though, as I mention later. If it is dropsy it would affect both eyes and his scales would be sticking out too because the fish is retaining too much water.
Oscars are pretty active fish so it could have injured an eye on something- hitting decor or the like. How is the fish acting, looking otherwise? If it is an injury the fish should be acting normal. An injury should heal on its own if the water is in top shape.
I have a seven inch black moor that has pop-eye in both eyes, they have bulgy eyes too, but this was way more than normal. He is a healthy fish who at one point may have had a bacterial infection that caused the pop-eye, prior to my receipt of him. The eyes are different sizes, huge, and feel really full of fluid. I would imagine that at this point his vision is impaired. Once the eye swells with fluid it is really hard to get it to go back to normal size, even if the infection is gone.
So, my experience says to take the other aspects of the fish's health into account to. Do not go crazy trying to "shrink" the eyes, as it probably won't happen.

I was just at my LFS today asking about two of my irridescents who had, between them, lost 3 eyes. Bith died, on after he lost his second (about 6-8 months after his first.) He told me it was a disease dealing with water quality, espicially ammonia. He also mentioned that frequent water changes would rectify the problem, (I was already doing one every 3 days though.) Furthermore, he mentioned the fact that different fish are more sescuptable (STILL cant spell.) then others, and then mentioned he had an oscar in the back that he was treating with marcyn, or however you spell it. Just then, another guy walked in asking for marycn to treat pop-eye. Me, the lFS guy, the new customer, and you, all withen 3 hours of each other.

We are on the third day of treatment, second water change and second dose for these guys. I am using the myacin and they are more active and the color is returning, however, the popeye on the one oscar isn't getting any better and their appetite has diminished. Anyone know what I can expect or should I change anything?

I beleive I said this before, but im not sure. either way, I think ammonia has something to do with causing the disease. Try to reduce it maybe? I hadnt heard of this disease before yesterday, so...
