is it safe to use polymer clay to make DIY holey rocks and caves for an aquarium? i really like the idea of making clay rocks, as they would be lighter, cheaper and to my exact specifications. but, most clays you have to use a kiln to fire them and i don't have or know of any kilns. polymer clay can be "fired" using just a regular oven. i read somewhere that the plasticizer used in the clay can leach out and thus this kind of clay should not be used in any kind of contact with food. does anyone have experience or advice on the use of this material for tank decor?

sorry I won't be any help but thats a good idea. I have clay flower pots in all of my tanks and there are fine, so if its the same material then I think it will work. Where do you get this polymer clay?? Can you make food same thigs out of it?

Polymer Clay FAQ

my concern is that since it isn't really the samething as clay pots, it might not be tank safe. the pvc itself should be ok since people use pvc in tanks all the time, but i am not sure about the plasticiser. too bad regular clay requires a special kiln to make.

does anyone have any other ideas besides kiln baked clay or polymer clay, for making synthetic holey rocks?

kiln fireing can be done at lower temps for longer times to equalize the baking done to fire a pot. ie you can use a fire pit, or fireplace to kiln pots etc.
