Hey, I'm new :) I have 2 20 gals (ones long), with one male convict in each, and that's it, and I wanted to free up one of them for maybe brichardis, so I was considering gettign a larger tank. It'd be 55 gal, I can't afford any more, and the one requirement is that it has a single male convict (I don't want any more of them). I've been told a single JD will work with him, but I hate to spend $300 just to add one more fish. I'd do it for an oscar or severum, but not for a JD and a convict. I suppose I'd be fine with just having these two if I could also have school of tiger barbs. Are there any other cichlids you think would work? I was considering jewels, but apparently they'd beat the crap out of my covnict if I got a pair? And even then I suppose I could just keep them all in the 20long, so if I did that with the 55 I'd want more fish.
Ideas?

There are many Central American cichlids that you could put in a 55g tank with a Convict cichlid. Just make sure they do not get that big (ie less than 8 inches). Examples would be from the Thorichthys family (Firemouth), Pastel cichlid, Rainbow cichlid, Sajica, a few Neets, or maybe a Nicaragua cichlid. For dithers you could use a school of large Tetras, Barbs or maybe a few Silver Dollars.

Of course, the best fish to keep with a male Convict is...a group of female Convicts! You will soon have yourself a Convict factory, which should be pretty interesting to watch.

BTW, a 55g tank is way too small for an Oscar. Good luck and do some research before purchasing.

severums would be fine, get a pair. you say only one convict but a pair is very fun to watch, very underrated IMO. other than that i have kept convicts with many other fish, big and small. convicts can hold there own very nicely.
