I just got 2 new power heads that came with large prefilter sponges that go over the intake. The question is, should I use them?

The reason I'm asking is the probabilty of nitrates building up. In my FW tanks, I wash them out about once or twice a week. Would I follow the same guidelines?

Thanks,
Dave

;) Mostly I agree. However, I maintain one sponge this way that is biologically active--and use it when I have to setup quarantine or hospital tanks. I keep a spare on hand, and replace it whenever removed so I don't worry about introducing anything from the q-tanks into my main tank.

As in a FW system, the amount of biological filtration found in one sponge is pretty small--especially on larger systems with macro algaes, corals, and live rock. My main tanks have never spiked when I replaced the sponge.

One caution--rinsing them can be hazardous to your skin. Stony tube worms and other calciferous critters will setup shop in the sponge, and wringing it out casually can jab one of them right through your skin. Use some care!

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll use them, but just wash them regularly.
