I will be adding angelfish to my planted tank in 2 weeks. Whats a reasonable number? Which type would you recommend for the most vivid color. I was looking at the golds and orange koi. I also like the veil. Any suggestions?

I believe the general rule for angelfish is 1 per every ten gallons of tank space, but that would not include putting 1 angel in a 10 gallon tank. I think the smallest recommended tank size is a 20 gallon high. I prefer the koi and sunset blushers, but I have 6 koi and 1 blusher currently in a 55 gal. grow out tank, so I am biased. They are all beautiful, and I think you will just have to look at a lot of breeders websites and decide what you like best. You also should keep in mind that some of your angels may pair up, and that could cause problems in your tank for the unpaired angels unless the tank is very large. How big of a tank will you be putting them in?

I will be putting them in my 55g planted tank (see tank specs). I was looking at the orange koi veil at mellowaquatics.com.

When it comes to angelfish I think there is not a prettier fish than a natural (silver) angelfish. I'm not a fan of the manmade unatural colours, but I guess that's just my opinion. In a 55, I'd go with 5, they's make a nice school and spread out the aggression among the whole group.

I too am a fan of the natural silver varient, but my top notch favorites are the black marbled angels and the completely black ones.

Mike at http://www.southernapistos.com has some actual red angels, no hormones or anything, completely natural color. Guess they are bred in the cechz republic

Does 'altum' as in peru altum mean wild caught? Is the natural silver varient wild caught or more so than others? Is this a picture of a natural silver varient? http://www.geocities.com/mikefjacobs/pAltumsWeb.jpg

As far as I know altum is a different species of freshwater angelfish, and is very hard to find in this country.

My personal favorite color variety is still the wild (silver and black bars), but I also keep a black veil, a blusher and a black veil angel. They are about my favorite species of fish... And if you do get a pair that lays eggs they will herd ALL the other fish into a small corner of the tank. My pair of 2.5 inch angels chased a 9" pleco into the corner!

Altums are a different specie (Pterophyllum altum as opposed to Pterophyllum scalare) and require more care than regular angels.

I currently drool over angelsplus.com's wild crosses. they may only have standard silver wild crosses right now but the difference in vigor is more than worth the lack of fancy colors or finage.

look through that same websites photo gallory and you will have an idea of all the varrients available in the hobby currently. their coi angelfish are the best orange colored angels I have seen.

if you are going for a really natural look, 2 silvers and 2 marbles or 4 silvers would look good. i always think they look better when you have matching ones, as opposed to 4 different colors. if you want some less commonly seen varieties, i think all of the pearlscale varieties, particularlyGold Pearlscale (http://www.fishfactoryonline.com/images/Fish/gps1.JPG) are pretty sweet.

I have never seen a fish that sort of colour before!

I have decided on getting 4-5 silvers. The angelplus site is nice! Anyone purchase angels from the internet?
