hello friends. I live in western NC where we had some trouble with our water etc due to remains of the last 2 storms. My fish were rather stressed. I lost a cory cat and my ph is all out of wack I forgot to check it before changing water as I live in a place it tends to vary quite a bit. My ph is rather low now near 6.0 I have added some baking soda just a bit to try to raise it up how slowly should I try to bring it up towards my normal 6.5 or so. We have been having boil warnings off and on for the water so my water change schedule has been comprimised grrrrrrrrrr.

Very gradually--no more than .1 at a time. pH is a matter of powers--the difference between 6.0 and 6.1 is multiplied by 100--significant more for the change in TDS than the actual pH of the water.

harsh chemicals

The water department is likely using massive amounts of chlorine if they are telling you to biol water, perhaps even stronger stuff.

I'd get a chlorine test kit, pool supplies type may be good enough, to be sure the dechlorinator you have is sufficient. Also, test for ammonia after dechlorinating, as if they do not usually use chloramine, they may use it now while the water lines are unsanitary.

Finally, if they will answer the phone, talk to them about what other unusual chemicals they may be using now.

After flooding and power outages, it is not too uncommon to lose fish to water changes due to the chemicals they are using.
