I have some half dollar sized blobs of a green slimy looking algae. It is in several spots on the gravel, and on a few plants, and moss. Whats the best way to deal with this stuff? good tank cleaning?? is there a critter that will help keep it in check?
It seems to get more and more every day.
Tank specs
55 gal, planted, 160 wats, DYI CO2 (started the other day), lights on for 12 hours, a day

3 angels, 3 clownloaches, 1 rainbowshark, 4 tetras.

Slimy? Come up in sheets? Stink like the dickens if you take it out of the water? If so, sounds like cyano bacteria to me. Nasty stuff. It can be tough to get rid of it completely. First, remove every speck you can manually. For ornaments and plants, remove them from the tank and clean them completely. If the plant is covered, I would remove as much as you can, and give the plant a dip in 1:25 bleach:water mix for 30 seconds (hard on fine leaved bunch plants--might be best to replace them instead). In the gravel, I had good luck using a gravel vac to suck it out. Be careful not to disturb it too much, as even a tiny floating speck will start a new colony. Then, add some powerheads, or re-arrange the decorations to allow more water movement. This stuff thrives in low current areas, where there is less oxygen turnover. Repeat the cleaning every time to see a new patch--don't wait for you normal water change schedule. You might want to monitor the hardness (KH particularly) as well--I noticed that my KH would drop at the same time as this stuff got nasty. Might have given it better conditions, or it might have been sucking up the carbon, but I had problems with my pH as a result of the KH drops.

Sound like cyanobacteria which is also known as Bleu green algea. nothing eats it that I know of because it is disgusting. the easiest cure is a three to four day total blackout. Cyano is funny stuff but usually goes along with high organics in your tank. do a water change, do the blackout and another big water change. test your ntrate levels frquently. an easy test to see if its BGA is to try to remove it. BGA comes off easily, but slimes its way everywhere one you get it lose. if it sticks tight or comes out in large peices it isn't BGA
