I don't know how many of you have been following my mini-saga, but my quest for the perfect 5-7ish gallon tank has been educational to say the least. I want something kind of different: ie, not a guppy tank, not a single betta with a few cories, etc, (not that these aren't respectable set-ups).

Someone mentioned killifish, and I agree that they are beautiful and fascinating. However the LFS's do not carry killifish and I live in a dorm and have a P.O. box. Shipping fish is difficult because the few reputable breeders I have heard of do not want to ship to P.O. boxes where there is no one to sign for a package.

However, I was browsing AquaBid today and saw a category for Killifish Eggs. I thought this might be an interesting alternative. Shipping seems a lot less complicated for eggs, and it could be fun raising my own fish from eggs...

Is there anything I need to know before pursuing this? Do all of the eggs usually hatch, or just a few? Is raising killifish to adulthood difficult?

Most of the species that lay eggs and need the eggs to dry out can be quite a pain in the rear end to hatch out and raise successfully. Do some research about them and give it a try if you want.

I'm having trouble finding trustworthy info. A lot of sites are out of date and the American Killifish Assoc.'s page doesn't load correctly on my comp.

However, if the eggs take a month or more to hatch I'm not terribly interested, because if I get a bad batch it means I wasted a whole month! And then another month to test out a new batch, etc...

Maybe I should focus on finding someone who will ship adults to a PO box...

If you're willing to take full responsibility for the risk of the fish being dead, I'd think most people would be happy to ship them to anywhere you asked.

Oh boy, I got the AKA page working now and do I feel dumb.

ArkyLady, I thought that you had to sign for live animals... Oh well. Now I just want to find some reputable breeders and learn about shipping policies.

Oh yeah, and then there's that whole cycle thing, lol. Patience has never been my strongest virtue. :D
