I will be setting up a 55gal African cichlid tank and since I came from the old school using UGF with a CC substrate that is the only way I know how.

I want to go with a fine shallow sand bed and avoid the UGF. Anyone know what kind of filters to get? Wet-dry? Canister? Specifics?

Thanks.

2 HOB power filters is fine for a 55 gallon tank, and will be alot cheaper than a canister or wet/dry filter. It'll also be alot easier to maintain. Some power filters say they can support up to 80 gallon tanks but its always better to have 2 for redundancy and to have more filtration.

Some popular choices are the Penguin/Emperor Bio-Wheel series and the Hagen AquaClear series.

Great advice. I have two HOB on my 45 African Cichlid tank, with sand and things are fine. My Cichlids love to dig nests, and kick up/suck up/spit out sand, so you may want to attach some sponges to the intakes of your filters. I have had one filter bite the big one, and I think that some sand got in and mangled the impeller parts. I got the sponge idea from a friend on the forums... :o ...thanks.
