I didn't attach my Java Fern onto something. Instead, I planted it in the gravel/substrate. Will this be fine?

If the rhizome part of the plant (which looks like a thick, tuberlike root) is under gravel, the plant will rot and die. The rhizome cannot be buried. I personally think it is easier to attach to wood/rocks because you don't have to worry about it and you can move it if need be. All you'd need is a rock or piece of wood and some rubber band, thread or fishing line.

It's just that we bought like 5 plants the other day and one is similar to java fern and I forgot which one it is. They look similar :(

You can bury the roots but not the rhizome.

You can also let java fern just float around unattached. I do that some.

Yet I have buried my rhizomes in gravel and the plants have been growing fine for 2 years now, produce numerous babies and th leaves are huge. I add no ferts to that tank no CO2 and the light is 2 wpg.

Then you are one of the lucky ones who gets freak plants;) Anubias are the same way...plant the rhizome and you're asking for them to melt into gelantinous blobs.
