I have a 300w heater in my 77 gal tank. Since these things get burning hot (so I've heard) I was just wondering if the fish know to stay away or do I need to do something to protect them from it? I actually wanted 2 smaller heaters but this one came free with my tank. I have it mounted on the side of the tank closest to the filter..

I had bought a heater cover but unfortunatly it didn't fit (I have a long narrow heater) and the guy at the LFS didn't think they made one for my style of heater.

Anyway, (I just keep rambling on here) - the main thing I would like to know is how do I protect my fish from burning themselves on the heater or is that something I don't need to worry about?

Any fish that would hang around your heater long enough to be harmed by it, is most likely already dieing by some other reason.

A healthy fish will not lay against the heater and allow itself to get hurt.

I wouldn't worry about it.
