No. Unnecessary, except to remove medications.

For those that dose additional nutrients like Flourish, the carbon will remove some of it from the water as well.

Keep some on hand as was mentioned for meds but stick to sponges as a filter material. It has worked for the past 2 years for me.

And sponges have worked as well for me, but more like 20 years. I also keep a sealed jar of carbon on hand, in case I get tannin coloration from driftwood - which weakens my already weak lighting.
