Hello Everyone,

It has been a couple of years since I have last logged on. I hope someone out there can help me.

I have two large Sevrums, one Gold and one Turquoise. A few weeks ago I noticed some behavior change in the two and a couple of days ago when I went to clean the tank I noticed that one of them have laid a whole bunch of eggs on one of the logs I have in the tank. The eggs seem to be vibrating and I am assuming that this means the eggs are maturing and may soon hatch? Some of them even seem to be bouncing around. Anyway, it has been a great thing to watch.

Here is my question, do any of them have a chance to live? I have 2 large Balas and one large Shovelnose in the tank with them. So far the Sevrums have been able to keep everyone away from the eggs but I am assuming that once they hatch they will become food for everyone.

I just thought I would share and see if anyone has any information or advice for me. It has been a great experience for me and my kids. I have been tryng to prepare them for the "horrors' of nature that I assumed would soon come.

One other quick quesiton, Does anyone know how to tell which one of my sevrums is the female?

Thanks everyone.

:D I didn't know fish eggs vibrate. The way you described it...I assume the eggs have already hatched.

To sex Heros...male has marking on face. Female lack of markings (less than the male).

If you want to keep some of those fry, it is best to remove them after they've become free swimmers for a few days and put in another tank with sponge filter. If you don't want to keep them, let other fish snack on them then.

To keep them, you need to do 10% water change each day. Once a week major tank cleaning (scrubbing and etc) about 40% water remove. Feed them 3-6 times a day. Keep the tank bare so that you can see the fry when you clean the tank.

Good luck.

Move a few at a time. If you move them all at once one of the parents may think the other ate them and try to kill each other.

Hi Mooseman,
Can I just ask you, how aggressive have your Sevs been now they are perenting. I have been thinking about getting a beeding pair in my tank, but not sure by cichlid standards how aggressive they can get when breeding. I don't wan't them to start taking out their tank mates!
Ta.

I have a breeding pair in my 92g with geophagus and other smaller cichlids. Only things the severus will do is to chase them off. However, they did injure a fish (geophagus who challenged them) pretty badly during their breeding season. They get that aggressive only if the fish is dumb enough to constantly bothered them or challenge them (don't mess with parents).

My last pair of breeding green severum bit me when I cleaned their tank glass.

IMO, no matter what kinds of cichlids, they will attack when they feel their youngs are in danger.
