I suppose it was bound to happen someday. My ancient Protien Skimmer that I was going to use for my new 40 gallon FO tank broke while I was working on the sump. It was the old airstone driven counterflow type (unknown brand, no markings) and it took a lot of work to keep running right anyway, so I think it's time for a new one.
The problem is that I designed a very small sump for this system. The old skimmer was a hang-on that I had adapted for the sump, so it didn't have to sit inside the sump.
I really don't like things that hang on the tank, so I am looking for a small free standing skimmer that I can set beside the sump. Skimmer technology left me behind long ago, plus there is such a huge range of price and quality, so I am hoping for some advice on what brands or models to look for.
Any ideas?
