Am I right in remembering that the red/orange phenotype is an aquarium-derived variant that is not found in the wild. If so, what is the genetic penetrance, i.e. does the wild-type morphology reappear in some of the offspring of the "red" / "orange" chromides?

Has anyone ever seen the wild-type for sale or know where they can be bought? I personally prefer the look based on google images.

I just got 6 red/oranges via mailorder on aquabid (2 DOA, hoping for replacements, waiting for reply) and I'm trying to learn a bit. New territory for me. . . (chromides, not learning!)

I have not seen the wild type in years - but they are really nice looking fish.

I think the orange variant is pretty stable. The few spawns I raised showed no wild forms, but I did not do large numbers, nor did I line-breed.
