I'm looking for a quieter air pump for a 10 gallon. I have a cheapo Hagen right now, and the noise is driving me crazy. I am using it to run a sponge filter in my Krib tank, and I think that a fair amount of the noise is just from all of the bubbles breaking the surface of the water. Any suggestions for making this whole contraption quieter? Or a different type of air pump?
Sorry, wrong forum... can someone move this to freshwater?

Get a German made Schego (they come in 3 sizes - I use the mid level which is called the Optimum). SUPER quiet - and powerful. Drsfostersmith.com has them online for about $20

Okay, thanks. I was just about to place an order. Do you know anything about the 'Rena Air' type that are on sale at Dr. Foster and Smith?
Rena pumps have an excellent reputation - some of the quietest pumps available.

I don't use airpumps now, but when I did, I only used Renas. A very quiet airpump.
Moving this to general freshwater.

I can definitely tell you to stay away from Whisper air pumps ( that is an oxymoron) , as I don't have much experience with anything else. I picked one of their mid range pumps up for my 20 gallon and it was quiet for about the first week or so....now its got a nice buzz to it. As far as I'm concerned, you can keep them.

My Rena is very quiet (I have a big one - the 400 I think) and was by far the quietest I've heard. My beef: I need a replacement part and I've never seen anyplace that sells them. It's pretty common for diaphrams to wear out, and being able to find replacements is something to consider when you get a new pump.

TetraTec makes great air pumps. You don't hear anything when they are on. I have the 80 size, which is like the middle. I convinced my friend to get one because his old pump was very loud. They are great.

I also just get a rena. It works fine, although I got a the 35 gallon size for my 60 gallon tank, thinking since I didnt want that much air, i could save a few bucks. Well, the 35 pump cant drive the air 22 inches underwater too well, so some gets out at the gang valve. I actually tried to blow my own air throuh the air line, and found it barely possible. But since you have a 10 gallon, that shouldnt be a problem... just wanted to share my story. Also, make sure you buy online; the stores overcharge.
