I was in my local Petsmart the other day buying some crix and catfood and of course I can't help but pass through the fish. Anyway, this guy is talking to one of the workers (an older lady whom I never seen in the fish department before) about starting a tank. She asked about his tank ... I believe he said it was a 5 gallon with a small hang on filter and a small heater. He said he needed to get a couple goldfish fot it because his kids won some fish at a fair a couple months ago and he'd replaced them like 8 times already. I guess he'd been buying the cheap feeders and trying to get them to live for a while. Anyway, he asked her what she thought he should get and I saw them go through all the fish tanks and she told him what was what. Next thing I know (I turned into the live plants for a few moments) she's bagged up 3, yes 3, medium size FANCY GOLDFISH! They were each about 3 inches, including their tails. I wanted to tell him to stop and not buy them but I also knew it wouldn't do any good. I then heard her ask about how long the tank had been set up and the guy said something like, "oh, I got it yesterday and set everything up and it's been running with the filter now for about an hour" ... uhg! I almost died! THEN, I watched in utter amazement as he then pointed out a PLECO for the tank ... and she didn't even say it was a bad idea, just caught the fish (rather roughly I might add). She had also been talking to him about getting a small cory to "help eat the waste" in the tank but I don't think he bought that one. I just couldn't believe what I had just seen. I know most of these chain stores are only in it for the sale but this store USUALLY has very knowledgeable staff and I double check the info they give me and it's 90% correct. I heard her telling the guy, as I walked away, to "make sure to keep your receipt cause we guarentee our fish for 2 weeks and if they die you can bring them back" ... YIKES! She seemed to know exactly what was going to happen but never said a word (kind like me I guess, I probably should have said something). Those poor fish.
