Does anyone else have experience with the basic marine kit from seachem?

First of all some of the testing discs are slightly greenish-yellow to begin with which makes reading them later even harder. I've also had a hard time matching colors I get to the ones on the strip, its more of a guess than anything. Its not exactly confidence inspiring and I almost feel like I could do just as well by smelling rocks and doing water changes than using the test. Can anyone offer any advice?

Hi,

I had the seachem Nitrate test kit and used it for a while. It is OK for detecting even trace amounts of nitrates (and nitrite I believe) but it is not ok for trying to get the exact concentration.

The only advantage they have over other test kits is that they have a positive control, which you have to dilute anyway if I remember correctly.

If you have money I recomend the RedSea test kit for Nitrates. It is much better and easier to use.

I'll probably try a different brand in the future, the nitrite/nitrate tests are somewhat easier. The ammonia one which requires the testing discs is my least favorite and most vague IMO.

For anyone using the nitrite/nitrate tests my understand of the explantion is you can run the nitrate right after the nitrite test, meaning just add the powder. Does this mean the sample will actually turn lighter instead of darker? Just trying to confirm I'm doing it right, but since I'm still cycling its hard to know.

Thanks!
